A Surrealist Bullfighting Scene – Indistinctly Signed – Jurgen?

A striking and strange lithograph showing   a bull with its front legs crossed and head resting on its left leg in a pensive manner with a dog howling at the moon and a matador (left, inset). Indistinctly signed,  possibly “Jurgen” and dated 1957 with an inscription below. Possibly German. In good condition, acquired unframed and recently framed and mounted.

Measures 52 cm wide by 41.5 cm deep (56 cm by 46 cm in is frame).

Le Liseuse by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887)

An exquisite bronze and ivory figure of a young woman reading, dressed in a headdress and elaborately embroidered costume in the pre-Rapheite  style, holding the pages of her book in two hands. By the French artist Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, who numbered Rodin amongst his students. Made circa 1880, this figure can be found in a  number of sizes, either  as a solid bronze figure or in and bronze with ivory head and hands, as can be seen in this present work. In fine condition.

Measures 61 cm high.

An interesting and striking  abstract work by the  contemporary Irish artist Derek Menary entitled “Photage No 3” using photpgraphic elements. This work is signed and dated 1978 verso and the media is acrylic cement, acrylic  and lacquer  on calico. In good condition.

A Jockey Jumping The 1954 Fence – Initialled J.C.

P1040763P1040764A witty and quite delightful little watercolour depicting a jockey clearing a hurdle which comprises the date “1954”.  Initialled “J.C.” this work was acquired in France so is presumably French. In good condition – an ideal gift for someone born that year.

A fine old French etching on vellum or parchment by Alfred Boilot (1761-1845), entitled “Le Hallebardier”, after Meissonier.  Signed in pencil. Copyright 1889 by Frederick Keppel & Co. of New York and Paris. Recently reframed and remounted. In good condition bearing in mind its age.  Image good. Some light browning and foxing to margins.

The Sentinel by Gaucherel after Meissonier

An etching entitled “The Sentinel” by the French printmaker Leon Gaucherel (1816-1886) after Meissonier. On vellum or mulberry paper and dated 1867 in the plate, this work has recently been reframed and remounted.  Bears a label, verso, indicating that it is on parchment  and is a proof etching.  Some light foxing overall but a rare and good piece. Published by E.E. Leggatt, London, in 1887.

A fine Japanese woodblock print by Gekko Ogata  (1859-1920) entitled The Life Of The Aristocrat Genji  And His Lady. A label, verso, indicates that this work by Ogata Gekko is from the series “Genji Monogatari” and was printed on October 20th 1893. In good condition.
