Bonnie Prince Charlie after John Pettie R.A. by Robert C. Robertson

A fine etching in colours by the Glasgow artist Robert Cecil Robertson (1890-1942) after an original painting by John Pettie (R.A.)    This work, which is signed and titled in pencil,  is in good condition and shows the Young Pretender  entering the ballroom at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edsinburgh.  He is wearing Prince Charles Edward Stuart tartan and the riiband and star of the Order of the Garter. At his feet are strewn silk favours. The figures with the Prince  are, most likely,  Cameron of Lochiel (c. 1700-1748), and Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Pitsligo (1678-1762). Both were loyal chiefs, who joined the Prince’s uprising in 1745 but lived out their lives in exile and in hiding after the defeat of the Prince’s forces at the Battle of Culloden.

Measures 36 cm wide by 48 cm deep (50 cm by 60 cm in its frame).
