George Mackay Brown had a long relationship with Stella Cartwright, the young woman who became known to Edinburgh’s litterati in the 1960’s as the Muse of Rose Street. The circle in which she moved included Hugh MacDiarmid, Norman MacCaig, Tom Scott, Sydney Goodsir Smith and others who between them wrote some of the finest Scottish poetry of the last century. Cartwright died in 1985 at the age of 47.
