Robert Alexander Dakers (1866-1954) was a well-known Haddington artist who exhibited 28 landscape and rustic paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, also showing at the Scottish Society of Artists and the Society of Northern Artists. Dakers lived variously in Haddington, Kirkcudbright, Edinburgh and Alnwick, England, throughout his lifetime. It was whilst he was working as editor of the local Haddington Courier newspaper from the 1880’s to 1918, that he became a friend and artistic tutor to a young Willie Gillies, later to become Sir William Gillies, who also lived in Haddington and who was to become renowned as an artist. Dakers encouraged the young Gillies to take up painting, tutoring him in the techniques of oil painting and encouraging him to stage his first exhibition in the shop window of a local watchmaker in Haddington’s High Street. Dakers moved from Haddington to Castle Douglas in 1918 then to Edinburgh about 1922. Dakers was no mean artist in his own right, producing many fine oils, watercolours and pastel pictures of the various landscapes where he lived.
