John houston was born in Buckhaven in Fife and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1948 to 1954. He married tthe painter Elizabeth Blackadder and in 1954 he joined the staff of the Edinburgh College of Art and later travelled widely. A few years later he was instrumental in launching the 57 gallery in Edinburgh where he held his first one-man show the following year. Elected ARSAin 1964 and RSAin 1972, he won the Guthrie Award in 1964 and the Cargill Prize at the Glasgow Institute in 1965. Houston was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour and the Glasgow Institute.
