Born at Dalby in Lincolnshire in 1773, James Bourne later lived in Manchester and London where he worked as a drawing master, going on sketching tours during the summers. He exhibited at the Royal Manchester Institution, and between 1800 and 1809 at the Royal Academy. In 1848 he gave up art for the Methodist ministry and died in Sutton Coldfield in 1854.
Several of Bourne’s watercolours are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, including a view of Dalby Hall, in Lincolnshire, which was owned by his brother. An engraving of the hall after a drawing by Bourne was published in the Copper-plate Magazine in 1801.

Rebarn House, Penge Common by James Bourne (1773-1854)

A very nice wash drawing by the English artist James Bourne (1773-1854) showing figures in front of Rebarn House in Penge Common. This work is in good condition and is signed  and titled in the artist’s own hand, verso, together with his London address at No 4 Somerset Street, Portman Square.  There is also a label for Newman Fine Art. This work was sold at Bonhams in Solihull in 2009.

Measures 23.5 cm wide by 28.5 cm deep (39.5 cm by 45.5 cm in its original frame and mount).
