After studying under Gilbert Spencer at the Glasgow School of Art, William Birnie went on to win a place a Hospitalfields where he studied under Ian Fleming. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career as an educator, eventually taking on the post of Head Examiner for Art in Scotland. In 1958 he became a founder member of the Glasgow Group and formed the Glasgow Group Society of which he was vice-president for 32 years. He also served the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society as Vice President and Treasurer.
A delightful oil on board by the Scottish artist William Birnie showing a view of a village – most probably Kilbrchan where he lived and which he painted often. Signed, lower left, and recently reframed, this work is in good condition.

A lovely little oil on board entitled “A View Of The Village” by the fine Scottish artist William Birnie. Inscribed and labelled verso, this work is in good condition and has recently been reframed. It would seem that the village in question is Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire where Birnie lived.
Measures 43 cm wide by 29 cm deep (64 cm by 50 cm in its frame.
