Born in the village of Berry Brow, Yorkshire in 1916, Sax Roland Shaw is considered one of the most significant Post-war Scottish artists, at home equally in the fields of watercolour painting, tapestry and stained glass as he was in theatrical design, church furnishing, murals, mosaics and stained glass – an artist who has inspired a generation of Scottish artists and architects. After leaving school he studied at Huddersfield School of Art between 1936 and 1938, and although offered a place at the Royal College of Art in London, he chose to study at the Edinburgh College of Art where, later, he went on to lecture in Architecture and Interior Design as well as stained glass. A Fellow of the Society of Master Glass painters, Sax was Consultant to Basil Spence on the Coventry Cathedral Tapestry. He held visiting lectureships at Glasgow School of Art and the University of Edinburgh, as well as a Directorship of the Dovecot Tapestry studios. His paintings and tapestries are in many private and public collections, and his stained glass can be found in numerous Scottish churches.
A gorgeous impressionist watercolour by the Edinburgh-based English artist Sax Shaw showing an exterior view of the Edinburgh Medical School. Initiailled by the artist, it bears an original note, verso, from a professor at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary indicating that the artist had painted the work for his secretary, who had admired his work. In good condition in its original frame and mount.
