Swarbreck was a London-based painter of landscapes and townscapes who, nevertheless, with his series of Scottish lithographs helped to create the Victorian conception of Scotland as a country of stags, moors, mountains and kilts. His major Royal Academy work ,”The bedroom of Mary, Queen of Scots, Holyrood Palace”, showing the anteroom where Rizzio was dragged and murdered, was exhibited in 1856.
A lovely original tinted lithograph entitled “The Regent’s Bridge, Waterloo Place Edinburgh”, by the London-born artist Samuel Swarbreck. Dates from 1837 and is one from a folio of 26 tinted lithos issued by Swarbreck in 1839 entitled “Sketches in Scotland, Drawn On The Stone From Nature”. In good condition in its original frame and mount. Signed, dated and titled in the plate.
