Born in Lille in 1887, Leon Danchin studied sculpture at the L’Ecole des Beaux Art in Paris and was accepted by the Salon des Artists at the age of sixteen, where, whilst continuing his education in sculpture, he devoted himself to drawing, painting, and engraving. Particularly interested in rural and countryside subjects, Dancin was attracted to dogs, and especially sporting dogs, as a subject, and such was his skill in this area that his canine work is now widely recognized as being among the finest, gracing some of the most prestigious homes in the world. Besides painting and sculpting, he produced about one hundred engravings and lithographs. This present image is a fine example of his work.
