J.M. Thomson was a painter of animal and birds who studied at the RSA schools and gained the Carnegie Travelling Scholarship. Later he studied in Paris and became President of the SSA and exhibited extensively at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He lived in Edinburgh and showed 71 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 73 at the Royal Scottish Society of Watercolour Artists, 5 at the Royal Academy, 44 at the Glasgow Institute and elsewhere.
