Born in 1796 in Bolton, Lancashire, the line, stipple and mezzotint engraver John Henry Robinson originally worked as a book-illustrator before going on to engrave portraits and prints after popular contemporary painters, of whom Landseer was one. He fought a long battle to win respect from the Royal Academy as a line-engraver and was eventually elected an associate member in 1856, gaining full membership in 1867. He exhibited 5 works at RA and both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum have large collections of his work, including many progress proofs. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery holds a copy of this present work.
