Born on the Isle of Arran and a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, James Kay was fascinated by the sea and shipping and is best known for his powerful, dynamic pictures of ships at work on the Clyde. His informal, colourful style, redolent of French Impressionism, was ideal for capturing the everyday drama and commerce of the docks, rivers and harbours, not only in Scotland but also in the coasts of Holland, the North of France and the Thames. Often working in a distinctive mix of pastel, gouache and watercolour, and later oils, he maintained a distinctive thick application of paint and an idiosyncratic use of colour. Kay began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1894 and won the gold medal there in 1903 for his painting, “River of the North”. The Leeds Art Gallery, the Dundee Art Gallery and Museum Collection, the Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow, and the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum, among others, hold works by this fine Scottish artist.
Exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1874 , Royal Academy (1884-1904), the Royal Scottish Academy (1884-1943), the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and elsewhere.
