Born and educated in Aberdeen, James Garden Laing was primarily a watercolourist who had studied at the Glasgow School of Art. His early work featured Scottish landscapes and the activities in and around local fishing communities but later he travelled extensively in France and the Low Countries and ventured to Egypt. He exhibited widely and was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1885. He showed 55 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 114 at the RSW, 80 at the Glasgow Institute, 21 at the Royal Academy as well as at the Fine Arts Society, the Dowdeswell and Grosvenor Galleries and at prestigious galleries in both Manchester and Liverpool.
Rothenburg by James Garden Laing (1852-1915). A fine watercolour heightened with bodycolour showing an archway with two women gossiping and a two-horse cart approaching in the middle distance. This work is signed and dated 1884 by the artist and is in fine condition having recently been reframed.
