Born in Cowdenbeath in 1931, James Downie Robertson knew from an early age that he wanted to be a painter and entered the Glasgow School of Art in 1949 on a non-diploma course. After leaving the School of Art , he spent 18 months as a non-certified teacher at a Scottish Grammar school before joining the staff of the Art School in 1959, initially on a part-time basis but later becoming a Senior Lecturer and temporary Head of Drawing and Painting. He retired formally in 1996 but held the post of Resident Painter there for a further two years.His work is held many public and private collections including HRH Prince Phillip and The Queen Mother. His influence on Scottish art during his working and teaching life was considerable.
