Born in Gourock in 1924, Bet Low was a student at the Glasgow School of Art before going on to study at Hospitalfield Summer School in Arbroath, where James Cowie was among her tutors.. Introduced to the Unity Theatre in Glasgow, which was to play a significant part of her life, she also became associated with the Clyde Group of artists and writers. Whilst focussing  on industrial and dilapidated areas of the city, she also, in contrast,  made regular visits to Orkney which provided much inspiration for her landscape work, of which this present, deceptively simple  watercolour, is an example.

After Rain by Bet Low (1924-2007)

A stunning watercolour entitled “After Rain” showing an extensive  Orkney landscape by the highly regarded Gourock-born artist Bet Low. Signed lower right and bearing a label, verso,  from the Compass Gallery in Glasgow indicating this work was shown at the New Painting Exhibition there between February 19th. and March 16th. 1972. The label also identifies the original purchaser.  In good condition. This work has been remounted and re-backed and fitted with archival glass. The original label has been retained.

Measures 48 cm wide by 36 cm deep (68 cm by 56 cm in its frame).
