A Scottish painter who built his reputation on romantic, historical and particularly military paintings as well as landscapes and portraits, Allan Stewart was born in Edinburgh and was educated at the Edinburgh Institution. He studied art at the Royal Scottish Academy Schools where he was awarded several prizes, as well as in Spain and France. He showed paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Academy, at public and private galleries in Glasgow and Liverpool and at other provincial exhibitions.

Signed and dated by the artist, this lovely watercolour shows a coastal scene with boats on the shore of Carradale, on the South West of Scotland, in 1901. This work bears a title, verso on the actual artwork, now obscured by the back-board. In good condition, remounted in its original frame.
Measures 50.5 cm wide by 33 cm deep (73.5 cm by 56 cm in its frame).
