Born in 1885 in Amsterdam, Tinus de Jongh was a Dutch landscape painter best known for his realist depictions of South Africa. After studying as a decorative painter at the Ambachtsschool , producing early works showing the canals and streets of Amsterdam, De Jongh began to receive critical attention when one of his works was selected for the prestigious Stedelijk Museum in the city. In 1921, he and his family emigrated to South Africa where he began to paint landscapes and etchings of Cape Town and Cederberg. De Jongh’s works are held in the collections of the Pretoria Art Museum and the Durban Art Gallery in South Africa, and the Stedelijk Musuem in Amsterdam.
