Born in Edinburgh, Thomas Swift Hutton (1865 – 1935) was a landscape and coastal painter in watercolour who exhibited at major galleries throughout the British Isles and painted beautiful scenes of Northumberland, the North East coast, Yorkshire and Scotland, mainly in watercolours. Whilst information about his early artistic development is scant, it is known that by the age of 27 he was exhibiting at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. Whilst living in Newcastle he began exhibiting at the Berwick Club and later at both the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy.
A very nice watercolour by the Edinburgh-born watercolourist Thomas Swift Hutton entitled “Seaton Sluice” and showing a beach scene, and in the distance, the village of Seaton Sluice which lies between Whitley Bay and Blyth on the Northumberland coast. Signed lower right and in good condition in its original frame.
Measures 49 cm wide by 27 cm deep (73 cm by 52 cm in its heavy gilt frame).
