Stephen Enoch Hogley was born near Huddersfield in 1842. Having started out as an apprentice to a house painter, he went on to study drawing at the Holmfirth Mechanics Institution before embarking on a career as an artist. Hogley loved the wild scenery of the Highlands of Scotland and of Wales and his many paintings reflect this love and understanding of nature. He exhibited 3 works at the Manchester City Gallery and 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists. He also showed at exhibitions at the Crystal Palace and the the Royal Albert Hall. He died in 1927.
