Although the Glasgow-born, self-taught artiste exhibited regularly in the U.K. during her lifetime, her unique style was considered outwith the restraints of mainstream art, a fact that inhibited her from gaining the recognition that she deserved. And indeed, it is only since her death in 2002 that she has received the success and public appreciation that she deserved. Douthwaite had originally studied mime and modern dance with Margaret Morris, the choreographer and dancer, and it was Morris’s husband, the Scottish Colourist, J.D. Fergusson, who encouraged her to paint.
A striking pastel and charcoal image of a young woman, entitled “Akpunonfoe” by the Scottish artist Pat Douthwaite. Signed and dated 1990, this work is in fair condition in its original frame. The edges are slightly grubby in places with a few small insignificant tears.
Measures 73cm wide by 96 cm in its frame.
