Jos Lussenburg was born in Enkhuizen, a small fishing village at the west-coast of the former Zuiderzee, currently the IJsselmeer in Holland. Since his grandfather was a professional fisherman, Jos came to love the characters and the romance of the fishing life and he made many friends among the fishermen in the villages and ports around the Zuiderzee. Due to the construction of the Afsluitdijk, completed in 1932, the Zuiderzee changed into a fresh-water lake and the fishing industry fell into decline in all the villages and towns around the new lake. Jos, who by this time was a professional violinist, hurt his left hand in an accident and an infection of a finger ended his musical career. Whilst he never lost his love of music, actively serving as a director of several choirs in Holland, he took the advice of his wife and started to paint. And it was in these works that his love of fishing and fishermen came to the fore, many of his paintings showing the rough waters of the Zuiderzee and the boats and characters – beggers , farmers and fishermen – that he came to know.
A fine oil on canvas by the Dutch artist Johannes (Jos) Lussenburg, (1889-1975) showing two fishing boats in harbour. This work is signed and dated lower right and is in good condition in its original frame. The date is indistinct.
