Born in Coalsnaughton, Clackmannanshire, in 1943, Hugh McIntyre D.A. Edin. spent his early years in America, including Portland and Rhode Island, and in Toronto, Canada. He returned to Scotland in 1963 and attended the Scottish College of Textiles (SWTC) before gaining his DA at Edinburgh College of Art.
He had a great number of jobs, including painting and teaching, and even ‘ran away to sea’ for four years. He travelled extensively through Europe and Asia Minor before returning to Scotland, where he later organised and ran Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries.
Most typically painted out of doors, Hugh’s works continue the long tradition of peculiarly Scottish painting. He regularly returns to themes, sometimes years after the initial investigation. His pictures can be seen in many public and corporate collections all over the world, including Milan, Paris and New York
