The Belgian artist Hubert Bellis (1831- 1902) was a painter of flowers and still lives who studied at the Brussels Academy of Art under François-Joseph Navez and then Henri de Coene. He worked primarily as a decorative painter until 1875, his early work being characterised by fresh textures and delicately executed fruit and flowers, whilst later works become more fluid, with a clear influence of Impressionism. Bellis’s paintings are full of sensual energy in the portrayal of flowers. A brilliant colourist and thorough technical painter, he was considered a leader of his style during his lifetime. Works are now represented in several European collections, including the municipal museums and galleries of Amiens, Liege, Amsterdam, Melbourne and Brussels.
A still life of grapes and other fruits by the Belgian artist Hubert Bellis, signed lower left. Generally in good condition in a swept gilt frame, there are four small and insignificant repairs to the canvas which is otherwise stable with no craqueleure, loss of colour or flaking. A lovely little picture by this desireable artist.
