Watercolour painter, printmaker and teacher, Harry Eccleston OBE was the first full-time in-house artist and designer of banknotes at the Bank of England. He designed the first pictorial notes – Newton, Wellington, Florence Nightingale, William Shakespeare and Christopher Wren. He trained at Bilston School of Art, Birmingham College of Art, and later at the Royal College of Art. He was President of the RE (Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers), and is also noted for paintings and etchings of the industrial landscape of the Black Country.
Stratford Vartiations No 10 – an etching with acquatint by Harry Eccleston, the first full-time banknote designer and engraver for the Bank of England. This work, from a series by the artist, is signed in pencil and marked artist’s proof. Produced in 1984, it is in good condition in its original frame and mount.
