Eugene Delacroix was leader of the Romantic Movement in France – a collaborator of Gericault in the anti-classical movement away from the establishment styles of Ingres and David. He became a symbol for the youth of his time of revolution and inpendence. In 1832 he spent some time in Algeria and Morocco and fell in love with the people other and their way of life. This present work dates from that time.
