Born in Jersey in 1886, Edmund Blampied was the finest artist to come from from the Channel Islands, renowned principally for his etchings and drawings, particularly of rural and country life. Having had no formal training in art until the age of 16, he left Jersey in 1903 to attend the Lambeth Art School in London where he studied etching under Walter Seymour. Two years later he joined the staff of the Daily Chronicle as an artist and was later to receive a scholarship to Bolt Court School of Photo-engraving and Lithography. In 1912 Blampied set up his own Studio and began earning his living by illustrating books and not long after that he had his first exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in London.
In 1921 he was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Royal Society of British Artists. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Paris Salon, winning a gold medal for lithography at the Paris International Exhibition in 1925.
In 1938 he returned to Jersey and stayed there throughout the 2nd World War and the German Occupation, painting, drawing and etching as well as designing bank notes and a set of postage stamps for Jersey. Blampied showed 49 works at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, 10 at the Glasgow Institute, 119 at the Leicester Gallery,49 at the Fine Arts Society and others at the most prestigious galleries and institutions up and down the UK.
