Cecil J. Thornton was considered by some to be one of England’s foremost watercolourists. After studying art at Leicestershire where he was born, he went on to show at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Paris Salon where he won a gold medal. Other significant continental awards won by him included the French
Croix de Chevalier, the Gold Medal of the Academy Leonardo da Vinci, in Rome, the Gold Medal, Merite Artistique European of Belgium. and the Gold Medal, Issoudum, Friends of Monmartre, Paris.
