Born in Co. Antrim, Southern Ireland, the animal, flower and landscape painter Anne Primrose Jury was introduced to art by her father who was a specialist in watercolour. Having studied at the Belfast School of Art and later in England, France and Switzerland, she began exhibiting her work at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1929, and it was through this prestigious institution that she sold her first work. Appointed an associate of the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1933, she went on to become an academician some forty years later. Whilst she was known for her landscapes and depictions of rural life, mostly in County Antrim and County Down – this present painting is example of such a work, showing as it does the travail involved in cutting and carrying peat for fuel – she was also to gain a fine reputation for her flower painting.
