Born in Castle, on the banks of the River Scheldt in 1914, Renee Kempen was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Institute of Painting in Antwerp, where she studied under Albert and Carlo De Robber, Victor Thonet, Samuel Vrindt and Wante. Originally a watercolourist, Kempen later took up painting in oils and from 1974 focused on marine subjects and landscapes as well as producing charcoal studies of figures. In 1984, the Belgian Art critic Rene Turky wrote of her:
“One of our best female painters She strives to produce warm, authentic and honest painting……”
In the ‘Illustrated Biographical Dictionary of Artists in Belgium after 1830 “, she is described as being:” An impulsive or meditative painter of figures, landscapes, seascapes, flowers and church interiors……. “

A Dockland Scene by Renee Kempen

A fine gouache painting by the contemporary Belgian artist Renee Kempen (b 1914) depicting a harbour or dockside scene, possibly on the River Scheldt where she lived. This strong, vibrant, expressionist scene is by an artist who has been described as one of the best in Belgium, shows boats tied up at a quayside below a turbulent sky. It is in good condition, behind glass, and has recently been reframed.

Measures some 51.5 cm wide by 39 cm deep ( 70 cm by 58 in its frame).
