Born in Portsmouth 1764, Charles Howard hodges was a portrait painter and mezzotint engraver who produced mezzotints in England up to 1794 before moving to the Hague in 1794 and to Amsterdam in 1797, where he lived until his death in 1837. He is most known for his oil portraits of European Royalty and other significant political, social and military figures. Copies of this present work are rare and can be found in important military, scholastic and private collections.
